• Hi

I was amending a widget in Zerif Lite when it timed out.

When I tried to access the website https://www.vividviolet.co.uk I was amending, I get a white screen.

When I try to access the dashboard I get the above/below error:

    Not Found
The requested URL/wp-admin/ was not found on this server.
    Apache/2.4.12 (unix) Server at https://www.vividviolet.co.uk Port 80

There are no reported issues on the server (I have logged a call with them).

Hope you can shed some light on this.

    Thanks

    Wendy

Thank you for all your comments. My hosting provider said this:

This issue was caused by the fact that one or more processes/scripts on your website were running longer than 2 minutes.
The script in cause is contained by the file:
    index.php in /home/cluster-sites/1/v/vividviolet.co.uk/public_html
To ensure the stability of the platform if a process/script on your website runs longer than 2 minutes, the hosting package in question is suspended.

As I am a novice and just use the most basic of WordPress widgets and functions I have no idea how, by adding text to a widget, this would have happened.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hello,
You could try the usual way to find the problem’s root, which is:

    – disable all plugins, and check homepage to see if it works
    – change theme to one of basic wordpress theme like Twenty Forteen, Fifteen or so, and check homepage again

If no improvement, I have no clue sorry.

What’s the code you try to put in this text widget please?

    Hi Digico Paris

I disabled all plugins and reactived all seemed OK – still very slow
Changed theme to 20/15 and all viewed OK – still very slow
But I am no longer getting the white screen.
I was just putting in standard text in the Widget – no code! Just updating the About section on the website.

Now getting obsessed by Google Page Insights currently at Mobile 59/100 and Desktop 63/100!
It says I should fix Enable Compression (but I run WP Smush) and – so I am wondering if this has anything to the original problem. Should I re-install WordPress – my site is very simple and I can’t understand why so many problems.

I have just installed WP Minify Fix plugin. Should I try any other plugins?

If I was to do a complete reinstall of WordPress, the database I presume would still hold all my blog posts? I would just need to copy back in the text to the Customise sections on the Theme?

I really appreciate your help – thank you

    Wendy

    Hi Wendy,

To try to answer you very fast because there are a lot of questions:

    1) I don’t think it’s just adding to text to widget that makes your whole site go nuts, it’s probably from another problem in your theme (like a forgotten end of php tag or so).

    2) If it’s true you have to work with performance and page speed, it’s not your main goal right now. Now, it’s always useful to do so. I use only one tool to do that because it’s great:
    https://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/

Just put your website url in there, it will show you which image is too big and an overall rank, with many suggestions to improve speed.

    3) Yes, if you do a new install of WordPress old posts will not be deleted IF YOU CHOOSE A DIFFERENT WP DB_PREFIX (very important).

For example, when you install WordPress defaut wp_prefix is wp_.
If you make a new install on it and same database, put for example wp_newsite as prefix (that way it will not erase old data and posts).

That way, old and new version will be in database. To grab it later, you will be able to export it and reimport it in new theme (like wp-content/themes/vivid-v2) for example.

Hope my explanation makes senses to you,

    Regards,

    Hi

Gosh, its all getting rather complicated for me.
    But … I’m learning (trying)!
Using your link my website twice:

FIRST Tested on IPAD and said it was run from Amsterdam = Performance is 88/100, Requests 116, Load 2.83s, Page Size 2.4Mb
Your website is faster than 57% of all tested websites

I don’t really understand the Waterfall page – is there anything I should identify from that as being the problem – I have an image of 407.5Kb that seems to take a long time to upload?
On Recommendation, Page Speed is 57% for ‘Remove query strings from static resources’ and 75% on ‘Serve static content from a cookieless domain’ all others are over 83%
    Page Analysis show 2xx Success = 114 and 3xx Redirecting = 1

SECOND Tested on Mac and said it was run from New York = Performance is 88/100, Requests 117, Load 7.62, Page Size 2.4Mb
Your website is slower than 80% of all tested websites

The biggest difference between both results that I can see is that on the iPad test in Waterfall the first element https://www.vividviolet.co.uk is identified as a ‘html document’ was 10.3kb and took less than 0.5sec to upload. On my Mac test this is ‘redirected’, 0kb and took nearly 5sec to upload.

Sorry for being so dumb and asking so many questions, feeling out of my depth, but I guess there is something important to learn from all this and I hope you can help me further.

I will come back on the reinstall query later (if that’s OK).

    Thank you

    Wendy
