Trying to setup my MailChimp API Key and I get the error: “API call to helper/ping failed: couldn’t connect to host”

I’m presuming this means there is something that needs to be done with my host, possibly PHP settings, but I’m unsure how to resolve?

My version of WordPress is fully uptodate and I am using version 6.0.3 of the plugin – can you help? Thanks in advance!

    Hi lazenbypt,

I can recommend that you view the knowledge base article found here:
    https://yikesplugins.com/support/knowledge-base/i-receive-the-error-ssl-certificate-problem-unable-to-get-local-issuer-certificate-why/

We outline some possible fixes for the problem. It seems to be an issue with some shared hosting environments.

    Hi Evan,

Thanks for this. I did try the advice on that article, but thought maybe I was looking at the wrong problem, as hosting support did everything I think I was supposed to do?

    They advised the following:
“We have enabled the extension openssl.so in the php.ini file in the PHP Settings and this should resolve your problem with the connection because for the cURL on our system we should enable the outgoing connections and the clients could connect to the external websites.

We have created simple cURL script to confirm that this functions is working on our environment:
    https://lazenby.co.nf/curl-test.php”

Despite this, I am still getting “API call to helper/ping failed: couldn’t connect to host” so I’m not sure what else I can try?

    Hi Lazenbypt,

Feel free to download the latest release of the plugin, version 6.0.3.1, and follow the updated steps outlined in our knowledge base article:

    https://yikesplugins.com/support/knowledge-base/i-receive-the-error-ssl-certificate-problem-unable-to-get-local-issuer-certificate-why/

(the last snippet on the page)

I have tested on a localhost install on my end, and that new function seems to quite well.

Let us know if that helps clear things up on your end!

    Hi Evan,

Thanks so much for persevering with me. I’m sorry to say that I’ve updated the functions.php with the snippet code, but the API doesn’t seem to be connecting, even though I am definately running v6.0.3.1 .

Is there anything else that can be done to troubleshoot? The hosting company already confirmed the bundle is uptodate, as well as providing the additional info I mentioned earlier?

I’m not entirely sure what else it could be, but feel free to email me at [email protected] and I’ll be more than happy to take a look for you. I’m not really sure what else to test for to help narrow down the issue, so I may need to do some debugging first hand.

    Hi

I’m Having the same issue. We’ve tried all the suggestions – the snippet code breaks the site, nothing else has an affect. Thanks

The snippet shouldn’t break the site. If so, you may be entering it in the wrong location.

    Who is your host?

    Hi Bookmonster,

Please follow the tutorial found in our knowledge base. The error message you are receiving differs from the one listed here:
    https://yikesplugins.com/support/knowledge-base/i-receive-the-error-ssl-certificate-problem-unable-to-get-local-issuer-certificate-why/

Lazenbypt was in talks with his hosting provider and they were able to resolve things for the user on their end.

    Thanks,
    Evan

Thanks Evan! Sorry for the lack of replies, I had some time away from the project for personal reasons. I’ve moved my site to external hosting now and contacted them for support – the error is now the one above. INterestingly wordpress plugin install and updates don’t seem to be connecting to www.ads-software.com either.
