• Hi guys, thought I might mention a little problem I found today.

My site is called “Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Pembrokeshire” and is at https://www.pembsdoe.org.uk.

Whilst I was messing about with google trying to get us placed higher up, I noticed that WP is replacing the apostrophe in the title with what I believe to be a backwards single quote (I take it this is some kind of PHP safeguard for strings etc.)

I *think* I’ve fixed it using the HTML ' but I just thought I’d mention it on here as I couldn’t work out how google was missing us so badly… This might be an issue for other people who might not have noticed it “Joe’s Blog” etc….

It seems obvious now I come to think of it, but I’m so used to the awesomeness of the WP admin centre, I don’t often have to stop to consider the underlying PHP of that bit. Is using the html code going to adversly affect anything ?

    Cheers,
    James.

  • What you’re seeing is the “fancy quotes” feature of WordPress’ wptexturize function, In part, it replaces straight single and double quotes with character references to their curly counterparts, and operates on a quite number of elements including the blog title displayed through bloginfo('name'). If it’s an effect you’d rather not have, it can be managed by commenting out the appropriate filter in default-filters.php (wp-includes/ directory).

Using the character reference shouldn’t be an issue, at least for search engines like Google, where for example I have no problem searching on my name using either Kafkaesqu?- or Kafkaesqu& #237; (space added).
