Apostrophe in email

We are using Events Manager on our intranet type site, but we’ve got a few users with apostrophes in their email address.
When they try to enter their email address E.g. ‘firstname.o’[email protected]’ into Events Manager, they get “ERROR: The email address isn’t correct.”
I see that this is apparently fixed in core, so I’m presuming that this is the form validation in EM?
Could anyone suggest a fix or workaround?
