Appearance customization options suddenly gone

  • Sometime after either my upgrade to WordPress 4.5 or to the most current version of the theme (2.8.1) the options to customize the theme in the WordPress panel are simply gone.

    Under the appearance -> customize menu, where I used to see options to change various display options, all I see now is an “upgrade to pro” link and a “widgets” button that does not render anything.

    I’ve tried totally reinstalling the theme and verifying all the files are properly uploaded. I’m unable to change anything related to the site’s theme through WordPress now.
