    Hi folks,

All menu items disappear after updating from WP 5.9.5 to 6.0. See https://www.screencast.com/t/DYSkzAdYX prior to updating to this https://www.screencast.com/t/dcf7s24zbx40

I want you to know we have created a staging site for this and have done full plugin tests with all plugins disabled and also with the theme on the stock WP twenty-twenty-one theme as well.

We have extensively collaborated with our theme developer prior to posting this ticket (i.e. Divi at Elegant Themes). They have ruled out any issues with plugins or themes.

I am continuing to search why this is. I see some articles on some related issues with the big jump from 5.9.5 to the large update to 6.0 but have yet to determine what is causing this or how to fix it.

Can others send some ideas to try on my staging site so I can solve (site or server settings etc)?

I am close to submitting a bug report here https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/handbook/testing/reporting-bugs/ but thought I would try what the good folks on these forums may be able to point out first?

Thanks all! Please shoot as many ideas as possible by as many people are welcome at this point.

I am not sure it is something with the old menu structure and the new menu structure in 6.0 that is being missed somehow (it is perfectly working great in 5.9.5 and all previous versions but does this on the jump to 6.0 with the vanilla WP stock theme and no plugins enabled so it seems to be it is WP core bug or something with a setting etc that I might could do a snippet patch for the update jump from 5.9.5 to 6.0 and be good to go after 6.0 to other versions from there or something)…just some other thoughts…

    ??

    Greg

P.S. No prior issues updating many sites on our servers for years. This is the first time we have seen an issue where it was not a theme or plugin conflict test not resolve an issue). We are on Liquidweb VMWare with Apache and WHM/cPanel and PHP 7.4 FYI.

I’m currently using 6.0.3, NO such issue.

Prior to this 6.0.3, Was on 6.0, 6.0.1, and 6.0.2. Again, NO such problem.

If you have done other troubleshooting steps, then you may try Manually upgrading. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file for this release (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server (NOTE: do not delete the?wp-content?directory or your?wp-config.php?file)?Read the?Manual Update directions first.

BACKUP: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups! See https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/wordpress-backups/`

@t-p Of course I know no such issues happen most of the time here. As a matter of fact, I can updated some sites fine too on the same server. FYI, I am on VMware if that matters with Liquidweb here https://www.liquidweb.com/products/private-cloud/

It happens to be only a few select WooCommerce based pet store sites that are the only problem. Other sites update fine.

I tried the direct FTP method and get the same results.

I did think MU Plugins. I disabled MU Plugins as well as regular plugins and am on the stock 2021 theme…I had hopes for that but still the same.

I also disabled any Drop-Ins but it is inactive anyway on WP Staging version of the site https://www.screencast.com/t/yCoZxpnsrnrF

Do you have any other ideas or thoughts?

We all know that many times things go fine for a majority of sites but there can be issues with some. This is the case here and not normal and some kind of issue with menus between 5.9.5 and 6.0 in these particular circumstances.

    Let me know other thoughts?

    Anyone else have ideas?

    Greg

P.S. I probably want to mention the original site is a WP MULTISITE NETWORK which could be part of this. See the version of WP 5.9.5 VS 6.0 plus /wp-admin/nav-menus.php https://www.diffchecker.com/woxsm51H There is a lot of removals. I think this could be part of the issue here. Now, I converted my subsite (non-primary subsite) site on the WP MULTISITE NETWORK to a single standalone WP site for staging purposes FYI. I think this may help us figure out want is going on…perhaps closer? OR…at least it may be clue if it is not only this file but other places as well relating to WP MULTISITE NETWORKS and/or Single Site installs and Nav menus for 5.9.5 and onward on, yes, SOME, but NOT all sites I understand.

I recommend asking at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/woocommerce/#new-post so its developers and support community can help you with this.

@t-p this not much help. Woocommerce is totally disabled as is all plugins.

@marpan I am making progress but still on WP 5.9.5 on our WP Multisite. Have been able to replicate the issue with all plugins disabled and going to the twenty twenty one stock WP theme on a staging site.

We have converted a test subsite to a single staging site, then disabled all plugins and with the stock WP theme being on WP 5.9.5.

    Menus perfectly fine and available.

Then, we upgraded to Wp version 6.0 and the menus totally disappeared.

We then when to the Appearence>Menu section and all menu items, of course, are the same (gone). However, our Menu names and assignments of our Menus remained (just the menu items themselves “appears” gone mind you). So…we discovered that IF we ADD one random page to any menu that should have menu items and then saved the menu then all the menu items suddenly do return magically. Then, remove the random added item from the menu you just added and resave and you are good. Do this process with any other menus.

The process stuck fine with our staging site and the menus remain and that staging sites was then updated to 6.0.3 and the menus remain fine still on staging.

We then enable the normal Divi theme and all plugins on staging.

    However…

When we do the same process on our WP MULTISITE NETWORK on live above and also network update all subsites, the process DOES work on the few subsites that are doing this (in my case 40 subsites or so have no issues at all with the menus, but about 6 have this problem). So, we did the process same as on the staging site and the menus do reappear fine. BUT…the problem on the live site on the Multisite is that the menus stay for 10-20 min but then disappear again on those 6 subsites.

So, it is either a issue where it is primarily a Multisite issue now with them disappearing again on those 6 subsites but the staging site sticks fine and does not disappear anymore after doing the process.

Let me know your progress too?

Also, WordPress folks here, could you consider this additional info knowing and try to give some good useful input on things we can try to get over the hump here?

I would say we are like 95% to solving this now but it is just that the menus keep disappearing when doing it on live on our Multisite only on 6 subsites but 40 other subsites are perfectly fine where we do not have to mess with anything on those other subsite menus…just these 6 sites.

    Thanks so much!

Additional help to get us over the hump much appreciated…smile.

    Hello @truebird

I reverted to 5.9.5, all issues with menu cleared.
Will update to 6+ when this is fixed in WP core…

Tried basically everything you did and no avail without reverting.

Also had the issue when I add one item and save, others appear, but dissapear after some time.

After manually updating WP core, I think the system started to no longer remove my again created menus, but reverting is my fix for now.

What do you use for your WP MULTISITE NETWORK, perhaps that is part of your problem?

    Thanks, Marin

    (@truebird)

@marpan Thanks for the further feedback. Is there a bug thread for the WP core folks to take notice and fix though yet? I do not think it is a common issue but it does happen. Elegant Themes (Divi) have also said it is a WP core issue too after spending 1 month with them going back and forth.

So on my WP Multisite Network, when I upgrade from WP 5.9.5 to 6.0 plus, about 50 sites are perfectly fine and most of the have Divi theme too. But about 6 of them have the menu issue only out of about 46 total subsites.

One common plugin they have is https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/megamenu/ I am thinking of disabling that and doing the upgrade, checking the menus on the 6 sites, if they are not there, bring them back with saving the menu with a new item with https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/megamenu/ disabled still and then enabling it after or leaving it off for a hour or so and see if the menus stay.

I may further talk to the Max Menu devs too before I launch a WP core bug request.

I have tried this on staging with all plugins disabled and theme on WP stock and it still happens but with staging the menus stuck after bringing theme back when adding a menu item.

I am trying to look for any clues as to why that is.

Are you using https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/megamenu/ by chance?

    Anything else come to mind?

With us collaborating, maybe we can solve 100% (I am 95% there)…just need menus to not re-disappear after we bring them back.

@truebird I don’t know if this bug is officially reported.
Flatsome theme developers also confirmed that they had customers with this issue and reverting helped.

I dont have any menu plugins installed, tried disabling all the plugins and themes, then manual update WP core and still menus are missing until I revert to 5.9.5

I also couldn’t figure why the menus ware deleting again, tried running every chron job manually to try to trigger the delete, but nothing worked.

If you do launch a WP core bug request, do let me know SO I can also report there.

    Thumbs up.

What do you mean what do I use for WP MULTISITE NETWORK? If you mean what host, it is VMWARE at Liquidweb.

    Marpan

    (@marpan)

@truebird I mean if you are using some sort of plugins for doing a multisite for Woo

    Thread Starter truebird

    (@truebird)

    @marpan

    Ah…I see what you mean.

Yes, I have tested that months ago too disabling all network enabled plugins.

Also, on staging, all plugins including network enabled were disabled too on testing and it still happened even on stock WP theme.

Are you using https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/megamenu/ too or not?

    Greg

    Marpan

    (@marpan)

    @truebird

I don’t use megamenu in the form of plugin, Flatsome theme comes with its own menu menu

I think this is just a core issue, and until it is fixed with new version, this wont be solved :/

@marpan Is your site with this same issue as us on a single site install or multsite subsite by the way?

    Marpan

    (@marpan)

@truebird I have a single site install, the issue is still present, we reverted to 5.9.5 for now.

    Hey @truebird,

I’d like to reproduce the problem you’re seeing. But, it looks like Flatsome is a premium theme.

Are you seeing the issue on a free theme that I can test with?

    Thanks!
