Would propose to allow add archive to WordPress as a module like blog post archive. E.g. there will be many tables but creating a page for each table makes it unusable as there will be too much information: too long menus in the end. But offering an archive module that can be added onto page like blog posts archive, makes sense. E.g. it could show 2-3 rows from beginning (would be a configurable option how many rows) and list tables like blog posts: collected into months (or any other logical units that could be configured). Would be nice to have also a RSS for such Tablepress archive module.

    Hi,

thanks for your question, and sorry for the trouble.

To be honest, I’m not sure that I understand what you mean. But from what I understand, I don’t think that this is something that is useful for TablePress, given that tables are no standalone entities, but always require a post or page into which they are embedded.

The idea is similar to blog posts. E.g. creating tables periodically with new data but would like to keep old table as well. For instance a schedule of certain organization. Now let’s say that there is a page in WordPress where the schedule is shown. Every month there will be a new schedule but old schedules still exist but cannot show as there would be needed to create new page per table in order to show it. It would be good to search from older schedules as well and see what events were in list in past. In time there will be lots of pages in WordPress (as usually there is a need to create separate page in order to show the table) and would be hard to access them – menus are going too long etc. But if there could be a module archive module like currently for posts are in WordPress – just showing posts by month – every month separately. In same way it would be good to allow people list old tables from that archive module without creating separate page for each table. Such archive module would be good to add e.g. to right side where in many cases are blog posts archive module. There will be small title with month and year and then listed all posts from that month. In same way would be good to see also tables listed per certain month. E.g. showing only titles or also couple of rows from each table – this could be configurable whether to show something after title and how many rows.

    Hi,

thanks for the extra explanation. Now I think I understand what you mean. To be honest though, I don’t really see how this would fit with TablePress and how this could be implemented. ??
While TablePress does store old revisions of tables (unless that’s turn off for the site in the wp-config.php), there’s no direct way to show them again, except for debug purposes.

So, I think that I’ll have to disappoint you here. This is not something that is possible with TablePress right now, and I don’t see a way to add it easily in the future, also taking into account that this is probably not really a necessary feature for the majority of plugin users (given that you are the first to ask for this). I’m really sorry, but I hope that you understand.

    Regards,
    Tobias

Well – there is a table e.g. for one month. Then there will be created a copy of first table and that copy will be renamed and modified for next month. In that way there will be one table per month. In WordPress there is one page where the last table is embedded. No one will not see previous tables even if its necessary. To allow see previous ones, there need one page per table created which is theoretically possible but to list all these pages in menu makes the menu too long already after one year. The idea is that if to show on the page just the last table but previous tables would be seeable through that archive module that exist also for blog posts – this is the native blog behaviour to collect posts into archive. When to click on month name, it will show all posts in that month. There could be configurable option how to group, e.g. by week, month or year. If there is one table per month then reasonable unit for group would be year.
The archive module could allow to see also previous tables. That could be also configurable whether to show all or certain tables publicly through that archive module. I realize that here it differs: we do not post tables as regular posts like currently in blog main page. In that sense these tables (like “posts”) are seeable inside WordPress management interface. Regardless of that through archive module these tables could be also revealed publicly if to configure so. The idea is to solve the challenge – how to show all (or certain) created tables publicly. Much easier would be just upload PDF files where tables are but why then use Tablepress? Also if there are translation engine used in WordPress – also the text in table will be translated if it is not PDF (or any other file). Allowing to browse publicly also former tables makes possible also to translate them. Also searching would then find text from former tables. Translation and searching are just a side effects in order to allow access former tables publicly.
Just could not see any other better solution how to aggregate lots of tables into meaningful and usable way and make them publicly accessible, searchable, translatable.

    Hi,

I still don’t see how this could be done easily, I’m really sorry.
For me, tables are just content elements, but no direct/own entities. I’m afraid that I can not add such a feature to the plugin at this time.

Hi! Possibly copy the technology behind WordPress posts archive module. Replace posts with tables. Tables are created separately like posts – they have identifier (e.g. title). The question is – can there be used that identifier to identify table? Or probably there is any other way to describe one table as a whole.

    Hi,

they do have an identifier, a table ID, that is mapped to a WordPress post ID.
Still, I can only recommend that you try this yourself then. I simply don’t have the time and resources at this time, I’m really sorry.

Well – I am not a programmer, so I am not the right person to do that. Time is limited for all of us, also for me. I thought that if there are more people in project then hopefully someone else has time to look into it.
