Archive page not working

Before today, I was using WP 2.7.1 and my archive page was working fine. Today, I went through the settings to change the permalink configuration from the default to pretty permalinks.

Now, the archive page shows no posts by month or category, both of which should have results, and my active Recent Posts widget doesn’t even display in the sidebar.

After this I upgraded to 2.8 but there was no change.

On a semi-related note, my comments aren’t working either, but I’ve seen a lot of threads and they all seem to allude to a bug in version 2.8 with certain themes (I am using Acid Rain 1.1).
