Hi there, thanks for the plugin, it looks really useful and I’m just getting my head round it.

Our site has multiple custom post types. I’ve set up notifications for new comments on Posts generally, which is working great, but do I need to also set up notifications for each custom type as well? Or do they fallback to the general posts notifications?

    Many thanks,
    Graham

    Hi @exmosis,
    Thanks for your message.

It won’t default to the New Comment notification for the default ‘post’ post type unfortunately, but this by design as WordPress by default doesn’t allow you to customise comment notifications on a per-post type basis.

If a New Comment notification appears under your custom post type in the list of available notifications when creating a new BNFW notification then yes, you’ll need to create a comment notification for that post type too.

    Hope this helps.

Great, thanks for the quick reply! That’s what I thought, but wanted to just confirm.

    Hi @exmosis,
    Not a problem at all!

One last quick question @voltronik – when I set up a notification for a custom post type, the option “Do not send this Notification to the User that triggered it” disappears if I tick “Send this notification to the Author”. Is that expected behaviour, and if so, is there a reason for it? This doesn’t happen for normal Post notifications.

    Hi @exmosis,
I’ve just tested this on custom post type and default notifications, including New Post Published, Post Updated, etc. and it hides on all of them. This is expected behaviour. I’m not sure why it’s hiding on some and not others for you but I’d expect to see the “Do not send this Notification to the User that triggered it” checkbox be hidden when the “Send this notification to the Author” is checked.
This is to prevent strange circumstances where the notification may or may not go to the correct users depending on who triggered it and who the author is.

    Hope this helps.

@voltronik Thanks, I think I see ?? So if I tick “Send notification to Author”, and the Author comments on their own post, they should get a notification of their pwn comment?

The other notifications do usually hide the second box for me too, actually. Bu for some reason it only seems to be the options “New Comment” and “Post comment approved” options under “Posts”, and “Comment approved” under any of the custom post types. That might make sense – you can then block notifications to the original comment poster. But not sure why “New comment” would only do it for non-custom posts.

    Sorry, hope that makes sense!

    Hi @exmosis,
    Yes, that’s right.

I think what you’re seeing is expected for comments because the checkboxes work slightly differently as comments is a different content type within WordPress. Some info about this can be found under the ‘Send this notification to the Author’ on this page: https://betternotificationsforwp.com/documentation/notifications/adding-a-new-notification/
