• Is it possible for me to have something like

    mysite.com/category/parent-cat-1/cat
    mysite.com/category/parent-cat-1/dog
    mysite.com/category/parent-cat-1/fish

    mysite.com/category/parent-cat-2/cat
    mysite.com/category/parent-cat-2/dog
    mysite.com/category/parent-cat-2/fish

But it won’t let me add the duplicate sub-cateogries, so how else can I do it?

  • I’m wondering the same thing. I’d like to use the category hierarchy for location where photos were taken.

    Continent
    Country
    State/Province
    etc

Obviously there’d be duplicate category names.

Ignore my comment, I found a workaround https://trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/6542.

It doesn’t appear for this to be possible with WP2.6.

Unfortunate, as I am working on a project that needs that functionality.

You would think that you could do that with heirarchical categories.

Most of the workarounds are ‘inelegant’, and not really what I would like to recommend a client to do.

This is possible. I have restaurant reviews categorized by state and then by type (I’m running 2.6).

Say I want to create a category Italian (which I have elsewhere, obviously) in a state I haven’t covered yet, say New Mexico.

I’d create a new category called ‘blahblah’ with a slug of italian-new-mexico. it’s the SLUG that counts, not the category. after the category is successfully created, you can then go in and rename it ‘Italian’. you must have a unique slug.

It will work. I have an Italian category in NJ, PA, DE, etc.. It’s not a big deal. Only takes a few seconds longer than it would if it were smart enough to only look at the slug.
