Are standalone attachments indexed in real time?

I upload a new PDF via Media Library but when I search for a word in the PDF no results are shown. Only after I do a “Synchronize WordPress with my Solr index” the new PDF contents come up in search.
Are uploaded files supposed to be indexed once uploaded like posts or do they require manual index trigger?
