• When I searched, I found lots of messages about hanging after posting, but I can’t seem to find this particular issue.

    My site is here:

    https://www.listenreadwatch.com

It takes an enormously long time to load — it gets partway there, and it just hangs. It will eventually load, but it’s horribly slow. I can also identify the problem in that if you hit refresh, it takes forever to finish refreshing.

I asked about this on the k2 forums, and they suggested removing a couple of extraneous scripts that were running, but that hasn’t really helped. I can’t tell whether it’s just that k2 inherently requires that long to load (in which case I’ll have to switch themes) or what, but it’s really frustrating.

If anybody has any ideas, I’d really appreciate any insight.

  • Main page loads in around 2 or 3 seconds for me.

Looks like some of those sidebar critters are calling out to other servers or services (like amazon)? Stuff like that can indeed slow your site loads down if those other services are slow or busy.

Even without the sidebars that use Amazon, it’s just not working right. It may load okay on a particular load, but for me, both at home and at work, it often doesn’t, and as I said, the reload takes forever. I have the site pretty light on sidebars now, and I just can’t figure out what’s making it do this. As I said, I have another site that uses WP and k2, and it works fine.

It just freezes and hangs. It’s got a bad script or something, and I cannot figure it out.

Hey linda…. it’s loading in 15 seconds for me tonight – on my dialup backup at 14.4. That’s not at all untenable….

Now, if you’re seeing a lot longer hang-time than that, perhaps it’s the number of services you’re pinging?

I’m having the same trouble. It seemingly started overnight. So I took down the posts that I made yesterday, even though they loaded last night, but it made no difference. I then went through and deactivated my plugins, one by one, to see if I could find one that wasn’t playing nicely. No luck.

It loads the sidebars, header and then hangs on the content. It will eventually load, but takes at least 15 seconds and that’s awfully slow for broadband.

I actually timed it and it’s taking 40 seconds to four minutes consistently, whether it’s a single post, static front page, or a category. Removing the pings doesn’t help. I am totally at a loss.

    Any ideas?

I figured it out. It was related to the php memory_limit, so I went into my php.ini file and upped it to 32M.

ajparker’s comments here helped me figure it out.

For newbs like me, the php.ini file is probably in your root directory. Download it and look for the line with memory_limit = 8M. Change it to 32M. Then reupload it. (Make sure you save a copy of the original, just in case.) You many have to put the file in each subdirectory, although I only put it in my root directory and wp-content directory.

Of course, this doesn’t answer the question of what script is using so much memory, but at least the blog is loading quickly again.

Can you post a link to a sample php.ini file. I’ve scoured my wordpress installation and my server for this file and I do not have it. Would love to see a sample. Thanks!

Increasing the php memory_limit in the php.ini file did nothing for me. This problem occurs with fresh installs of K2, so it can’t be calls to external servers. I’m surprised there is not a more definitive answer as to what is going on here.

I’m surprised folks expect a definitive answer to their server issues from the support forum of a php script. ??

Most without providing a sample URL or any sort of information about the observed issue or server specs.

Well, the one thing that ALWAYS needs saying about the php.ini file is that on many hosts it’s NOT available without contacting the host tech support.

I’ve had three hosts in the last 5 years; one of them was very happy to repath the php.ini access to my root and provide a file for me to tweak; one of them was appalled that I would even ask; the third had it automatically set up in root when I moved to them.

*shrug* As with almost everything in the world of hosting, it’s a crapshoot.
