• Hello everyone.

I am using the free version of the Ascend theme, and have built a simple web site where I merely display a portfolio grid as the home page, with each portfolio corresponding to an item that I made (woodturned bowl). This seemed like a good idea to get the site up and running quickly, but I seem to have run into a problem: The portfolio grid, when set as the home page of the site (in Settings > Reading) looses the ability to paginate. Is this how it is supposed to be? I tried to create a second page with the same structure, and there pagination works fine. But, when I set this second page as the home page, the pagination disappears like in the first one.

The current home page is set to display 26 portfolio items (the max allowed value in theme options). Once I create the 27th portfolio, I will begin losing from the other end. The way I wish the home page to function is as on the page that is loaded when the “(Test)” item is clicked in main navigation menu. As I mentioned previously however, when I set the “(Test)” page as the home page, it looses pagination.

Am I missing something, or was this approach simply a bad choice? Would there be a workaround?

    Kind regards,
    Arifi Koseoglu

    Hey Arifi,
Sorry for the delay! Unfortunately, there is not a way to create pagination on the homepage portfolio. You can’t use a page template on the homepage as it will be overridden by the home page template. So your portfolio posts would need to be added from theme options > home layout.
Hope that’s helpful! Sorry I don’t have a better solution for you.

    Many thanks Hannah,
I the meanwhile I extended my search on the Internet, and have come to the conclusion that this has more to do with WordPress’ standard behavior rather than the theme’s. There seem to be some pagination solutions which envolve php coding, which I do not want to get lost in.
So, I have changed my design.
Now, I have limited the home page to display only six of my newest items and added a link at the bottom for visitors to click on to go to the complete portfolios page. Actually, this also prevents visitors to have to load all of the items up front even if they are not interested that much. So I consider this problem solved ??
Again, many thanks for the info.
    Kind regards,
    Arifi
