Asset optimization not showing compression
-
Strange problem, when I look at the assets, they have that little spinny icon alongside them. They never change, and I can’t see what compression I have on the files. It says it will update when a page is visited, but after visiting still says the same.
Fantastic plugin though I have to say. can you help?

Hello @audiomonk,
I hope you’re doing well!
The Spinning icon on the assets means that the compress in progress. If it has stuck and not changing after visiting the page, there is some sort of an issue. First please visit all pages of the front end (if possible) of your site, to make sure that all assets have been loaded on the front end.
Please open Inspect tab (right click > Inspect), in Chrome, while you visiting these pages and see if there are any JS errors in the Console tab. Please see this screenshot:
https://monosnap.com/file/SbWSPRVXtKwOnluD4FGtT8NfPawEaxIf there are JS errors, these need to be resolved in order to fix the compression issue. These are usually showing if there is conflict between the plugins active on your site.
To resolve this, first please make sure all plugins are up to date. Have a full site backup before doing any changes on your site, so you could restore it back if something will go wrong.
– Deactivate all plugins and view the front end for JS errors
– If all is well, start activating one plugin at a time. Once the JS error will be back, the last activated plugin is causing the issue. Try to locate if the JS error is showing up when only this plugin is active, or it is conflicting with another plugin.Follow the steps from the flowchart:

Kind regards,
NastiaThank you for your reply, I’m not sure it’s a conflict as it was working for a while, but then seemed to stop with no plugin changes. I’ll follow the steps though and see if I can find out what is happening.
Hello @audiomonk
We haven’t heard back from you for a while, so I mark this as resolved.
Feel free to post back any updates or open a new ticket about it.Thank you,
DimitrisSorry, been very busy. I did disable all plugins, and still doesn’t show compression and has those spinning animations on the assets. I changed theme also and still did the same, so am not sure what is happening.
Hi @audiomonk
I hope you’re well today!
Some of the possible reasons are those described by Nastia but if that’s not the case, next things to check, in my opinion, would be:
– is there any additional – especially server-side – cache on site other than Hummingbird’s Page Cache? If yes, try clearing it up or even disabling
– I’m not sure what are current settings of those affected assets of your site – are they only minified or is it in “Advanced Mode” with all the optimization options enabled? If latter, could you try “experimenting” a bit with those settings for each of affected files?
– could you try enabling Hummingbird’s debug.log and look into the log file? To do so: go to the “Hummingbird -> Asset Optimization -> Settings” page, switch the “Enable debug log” option on, then go back to Asset Optimiztion and re-check files (make some changes and publish them too), then wander around front-end a bit and get back to “Hummingbird -> Asset Optimization -> Settings” page and see if you can then download log file from there.
A look into that file might possibly give some insight on what is happening.
Best regards,
AdamHi Adam,
It’s compression that seems to be affected only, when it shows that files aren’t compressed. I click on them, and publish changes. Then I visit my site as it says to do, then when I go back I get those spinning “busy” animations next to the compressed assets. Also the text at the top doesn’t calculate any kind of compression savings.
There’s no server side cache, but I’m using cloudflare and it is connected via hummingbird.
I’ll enable the log, I did do that before but couldn’t work out where to find the log. So will give that a try and see what may be happening to cause the problem.
Hello @audiomonk
I hope you’re doing well!
If the issue still persisting after purging CloudFlate cache, would you please temporary pause CloudFlae and see if this will resolve it?
Hummingbird, in order to minify a file, it needs to be loaded on the front end. Please try loading at least once all pages from your site.
Please let us know, the spinning wheel is showing on all files or only on some?
Please share with us the debug.log as well, as Adam mentioned in the above reply
Looking forward to your reply!
Kind regards,
NastiaThe issue still persists after putting cloudflare into development mode.
Do all pages have to be loaded for the compression section to work ? I’ve a ton of pages, and visiting each of them would take a long time.
The spinning wheel happens on every file that is marked for compression. I did share the debug log in an email, and the response I got was to check for plugin incompatibility and something else I can’t remember now. I checked anyway and the issue still persists.
I absolutely think the plugin is great the way it handles assets, but it can be so unpredictable. Sometimes my performance score goes from 80 to 62, most recently when I decided to move something to the footer.
Hello @audiomonk
Could you please share the Asset Optimization debug information as instructed by Adam here https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/asset-optimization-not-showing-compression/#post-12210162 ?
Thank you,
DimitrisWill do, sorry for the delay.
