Hello – we have Hummingbird active on 3-4 of our sites on WP Engine, and for the most part it works well. But maybe every few months, someone will look at one of the sites and find it suddenly broken with a scrambled mess of CSS. Clearing the Hummingbird cache (and then the WPE one) fixes the problem. But obviously it would be better if this didn’t happen at all and no one was seeing a broken site.

No settings would have been changed in the plugin in between these instances. We do updates fairly regularly on all plugins, but of course test that everything is okay once it’s up on production, and don’t run into the problem then. We don’t allow plugins to auto-update. It’s not obvious what might be setting off this glitch.

On the site that just did this today, Speedy is set and it’s optimizing CSS, JS, and fonts. There are actually a lot of exclusions, so it’s not even doing the majority of CSS/JS on the site.

Any suggestions for what we should look at to prevent this happening? Switching to Autoptimize or Fast Velocity Minify works, but I kind of like Hummingbird for other reasons.

    Thanks!

    Hi @kstarcher

I hope you are doing well today.

As issue cannot be replicated just like that it will be good to follow this in first place to see what is going in page source:

    1. as soon you will notice again this issue, please check site source and make a list of all JS and CSS file, taking into account names of those files and number of all items
    2. clear cache, fresh page and repeat same process with a list

Having both list we could compare them and see which of files does not load.

In general, I can only assume that there must be something with Hummingbird Asset Optimization settings.

    1. Do you use Asset Optimization in manual or Automatic mode?
    2. When it comes to clearing cache, do you mean you clear cache in the Asset Optimization area or Hummingbird – Cache? As this will also put more light for us.

    Kind Regards,
    Kris

Hi Kris – thanks for helping. On the site that most recently failed, it was:

    1. Automatic (speedy)
    2. Hummingbird cache via the dropdown at the top.

I’ll keep an eye out for any other instances, and report back if/when it happens again!
