Does anyone know how to restrict users to posting only in certain categories? It seems like such a simple thing, but I can’t figure out how to do it. Thank you!

I believe Dave Coppit’s Category Access does that.

Thank you for that info. I installed the plugin but I can’t get it to do exactly what I want. I want to restrict the writing of posts only. Each user can post to and manage one category only, but everyone can view all posts. If I give a user access to one category, then once he/she has logged in, he/she can see only posts in that category.

I need to be able to assign separate permissions for viewing and writing posts.

    Any other ideas?

    I found another plugin here:
    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/bind-user-to-cat/.

Bind-user-to-cat binds each user to a specified category. It works great. A user can post to only one category. When he goes into Manage, he sees all posts but can edit only the ones in his category. ?? And everyone is able to view all posts.

    Try it, you’ll like it!

This is a much better plugin:

    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/user-cats-manager/

However there is currently a bug in it that causes category pages to display a 404 error for users that are logged out.

    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/bind-user-to-cat/

Worked great! Binds a single user to a single category. On my installation the user/author still sees all categories when they write a new post…but after 8 hours looking for different stuff, this saved my butt. WEB11’s “much better plugin” has a a HUGE 404 error bug and the author never plans on fixing it…stay away from that little piece of hot mess.

On my installation the user/author still sees all categories when they write a new post

Then how does it work great? Because that is the problem I found with it. At least the other one actually works, but you are right, as I mentioned before there is a bug.

OMFG… so it is a bug! I’ve been having this problem with User-Cats-Manager since a month and thought it was MY error! Also tried Bind-User-To-Cat but as WEB11 says it just doesn’t work, the author can still see all categories!

Also tried https://www.coppit.org/code/ but seems to have the same bug: only logged in users can see the posts!

    Any working plugins?

Wait a sec, I got it: use Dave Coppit’s Category Access as Michael said! In addition to selecting categories for the blog authors, you also have to select the allowed categories for “Anonymous Users” – then it works!

i just installed https://www.coppit.org/code/ but i can only choose between Category Access for New Users and Anonymous Users. shouldn’t there be the existing users so i can manage their access to the categories? i’m using wp 2.7.1

    thanks

I posted this in another thread.

I’ve been travelling the forums and the net looking for the same solution and I finally came up with a combo that’s easy to use and works great.

First I created a new user role using the Role Manager plugin (you can disable the plugin after you’ve used it and the roles remain).

Then I bound individual users within the new role to specific categories made only for them using the Bind User to Category plugin.

Finally, I hid options and selections (including the category selection option) from those users with the Adminimize plugin. This last plugin was the key that I had been searching for and couldn’t find.

Now, userA can only post to the userA category and it’s by default. userB can only post to the userB category by default, etc.

    Hope this helps.
