Assign user to groups; user logs in and group reset to default group1

I use the plugin bbp Private Groups
I can assign a user to a group/s and save (I have looked at the usermeta table and it displays eg meta_key= private_group ; meta_value= *group1*group2*group4*) but when the user logs in, the value returns back to group1 (which is assigned on first login.)This plugin had been working perfectly before I installed the update last week.
I would be grateful for any advise?Thank you in advance
