• I’m using my WordPress site to host the file for my first podcast, but have run into trouble. I can load the file but can’t link to it. Can anyone help?

First, I FTP’d the file (format m4a, size 21 MB) onto the server, into my most recent set of imported media files. But when I visit my media gallery, the file doesn’t show up.

Any clues on how to make WordPress generate a URL for a file like this?

    FYI, my site is https://theferrisfiles.com

  • well, one of the simplest ways if you plan to do a lot of podcast episodes, is with a podcast plugin!

I use powerpress on mine…for weekly DJ mixes.

if you don’t like that method, there are plugins that allow wordpress to recognize files from your server that weren’t uploaded by WP interface
    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/add-from-server/

And finally, you can just hardcode the link into each post
just type Download Podcast or something, highlight it, click the link icon in your editor, and type in the url to your file (or code the url yourself through the html editor)

if you upload the file via the media upload feature .. here are otto‘s instructions for creating a direct link to said file:

    1. Add new post.
    2. Click “Add Media” button.
    3. Using the file selection thing, select your file and click the upload button.
    4. After it uploads, you’ll have this new section that shows a Title, Caption, Description, and Link URL. Fill in any of the fields the way you want.
    5. Click “File URL”.
    6. Click “Insert into Post”.

What you’ll now get in your post will be a link to that file. Write the rest of your post and publish it.

I didn’t notice the file size in the OP’s post…..you should be able to upload a 21Mb file through the standard WP media interface I would think? I usually deal with files closer to 150-200Mb, so it gets a bit flaky…..

When I try to post through the standard WP media interface, I get a message that the max size is 8 MB. Mine’s too big — that’s why I’m looking for other options.

RVoodoo, I’ll try the podcast plugin and letcha know how it works.
