Assigning contributor role to specific pages and posts?

I want the chapter officers to have the power to control their own pages and write blogs under their own category, and perhaps write sub pages under their page, but I don’t want them fooling around with other areas of the site.

That ALMOST sounds like a need for MultiSite, except that it might be a bit overkill. MultiSite would give each user admin abilities over their own site, and control to, y’know, run a site.

Alternately.

Plugins like https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/members/ will like you restrict part of the site based on user groups.

Then use https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/restrict-categories/ to limit the group to a category.

This Members plugin looks pretty good! That way the dozen or more
of our chapter officers can have control over their own area without having the power to totally mess up the rest of the site. for example, the chapter president can write his own bio, blog, create sub-pages, etc., the Apprenticeship chair can work his own area, etc., etc., etc. This is great!

I just installed and activated Members. So I now install restrict-categories also? They work together?

They can work together. Once you make a member role, you can restrict that rule to certain categories with restrict-categories plugin.

Great. But categories are for posts. Pages have parents. Can I also give them permission only for certain pages too?

I printed our the documentation for Members and will study it before taking any action.

The restrict-categories plug-in works great for posts. The user can only use the selected categories. Perfect. I wish I knew how to select specific pages to authorizes editor or author or contributor role.

You can do this with the members plugin. On the edit Page screen there is a metabox from the plugin to only allow certain user Roles acces to that Page.
