Trying to understand why the size of my site grows so fast, I discovered that for each image I upload, a ridiculous amount of additional images is generated (like 16 more).

Is this coming from WordPress? If yes is there a way to configure the behavior?

  • Every wordpress template have it’s own picture sizes (you can see it in a media library settings) – so it create minimum 3 files. Also some plugins generate thumbnails for their needs (for example “similar posts with thumbnails”). Hence if you don’t use old templates and plugins you need to clean junk image files. There are plugins for that.

It could also be your theme. I’ve seen many themes that ask WordPress to generate additional custom image sizes for use in a particular part of the template.
