Like with many other people, I tried the auto upgrade to 2.8, and the whole site is blank. My host just keeps telling me to re-install the app and that they see no errors in their error log.

Here are the steps I’ve tried:
    – Disabling plugins by renaming my older plugins folder “plugins_temp” and adding a blank plugins folder – I also didn’t have many to begin with. My site was pretty bare bones.
    – Deleting the extra line break in wp-config.php
    – Following the detailed upgrade instructions by manually deleting and re-uploading files via FTP

What I’m sitting on now is a backup of my database in .sql format. And I have no idea how to just get a clean copy of wordpress running with default theme and no plugins. Should I uninstall it from my domain (I use iPower as my host), which deletes my existing database and then re-install? How would I upload my database backup at that point?

My site is at el-twirpo.com/blog Any help would be appreciated!

  • Sorry I can’t be much help here, but you may want to try manually wiping out the whole WP install (after you’ve saved your wp_content folder, etc) and reinstalling an older version of WP that was working for you. That might get you up and running for now until you can figure out the problem.

Question: What is in the wp-content folder that I need to keep? I didn’t tinker with any of the layouts – just downloaded and installed a theme previously. I can always re-install the theme later once the default is up and running, right?

almost lost all my uploaded images in the wp-content/uploads folder, but managed to salvage some in the massive delete. re-uploaded 2.7, and finally have things working. good luck to anyone else who might be dealing with probs upgrading to 2.8. i’m just going to wait until i absolutely have to upgrade because this was painful!
