    Dear Yoast Team,

I have been struggling with google problems and only today I found over 1,5 thousand of indexed attachment pages in google search console. There is not much content on the website, however it ranked well before the position dropped. This is a big problem for us. The website has not been updated for some time now (also when it comes to plugins) and we have been adding lots of photos lately. The bug did not appear earlier because there were only a few images/ attachments on the website.

I came across this thread https://yoast.com/media-attachment-urls/ & https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/attachment-page-indexing-disaster/ and this might be a case for us. I installed the plugin Yoast SEO: Search index purge which is now active but does not seem to work.

When I visit one of the attachment pages https://www.cb163.pl/galeria/best-lifter-cb163/bestlifter-52/ I can still see the page and no 4XX http status code generated? Can You please advise what I can do to remove all the indexed attachment pages and how can I get Your plugin to work? Should I disable the plugin and just set attachment URL to “Yes”? Or is it something wrong with the plugin itself? Please help.

    Thank You!

We looked at your site and it looks like the Yoast SEO: Search Index Purge plugin is no longer active. Can you please confirm whether it is still active?

In the meantime, we do recommend you to set YES in the media (attachment) settings from Yoast SEO.

Hi and thanks for the reply! I posted this question some time ago. I had to act fast so already disabled the plugin, set YES in in the media attachment setting. I then asked google to remove those links (starting with /galeria/*) and blocked them using robots.txt.

Would You consider it to be a valid solution?

    Thanks!
    Chris

    Hi,

Yes, that is a valid solution. We are not sure how long it will take Google but we would expect them to at some point begin to remove those attachment URLs from the SERPs.
