Attachments and/or link in responder email

I would like to be able to attach a .pdf file to each person who signs up for my newsletters. I have tried “email before download” with “download monitor” plugins as suggested on the forums to use in conjunction with contact form 7 but have not been able to make it work.
As a second choice I would like to include a link for them to download the file from the responder email, however this is not working for me either. I have ticked off “Use HTML content type” for both Mail and Mail (2) but the code shows up in the email, not the link.
I am not a coder and don’t know php so would appreciate the easiest method to facilitate one or the other.
