Attribute type:"text"?

I have been trying to understand how to use the text type attribute but it makes no sense to me! I am trying to set up a belt as item and have on drop down for the sizes but wanted to use a text box for people to put in their color choice instead of pre defined in a drop down. Nothing I do gets me anywhere near what I an trying to do!
I am trying to cut down on the # of prices I have to manually enter for all variations. There are 13 belt sizes and 3 tiers of prices in that list. When I add 6 colors and make all variations it is 6×13 diff places I have to enter manual prices.
I am hoping to just add the color choices in the description then they can just type it into “A TEXT BOX” That will show on order form. That way I only have to set prices 13 times instead of 78 times for every single variation.
Is that what the TEXT choice for on the attributes page?If not what is it for and how does it differ from the normal drop down setup? How is it used and how can I do what I need?
I have a site with 200-300 belts and they all have to be added. I hope to GOD I dont have to set 78 prices for each item! There has to be a logical way to do this….i hope.
Can anyone give me some tips or info about a better way to add the colors as a manually typed enter-able choice for the buyer to type it in themselves?
