Attributes for variable products in addional information tab

  • Variable products require you to set some attributes for variations in the attributes tab, and then set the variation data in the variations tab. If I also check the ‘show on products page’ box, the variation attributes (in my case ‘size’) are also shown in the ‘additional information’ tab, however it shows all the variations in stead of showing just the relevant information for each variation when it’s selected.

    For instance, I have the attribute ‘size’ with two values: ‘2 litres’ and ‘5 litres’ and checked both boxes — visible on products page and used for variations. When I go to the product page, in the additional information tab it says ‘size: 2 litres, 5 litres. I want it to say ‘2 litres’ when the 2 litres varation is selected from the dropdown box, and ‘5 litres’ when the 5 litres variation is selected from the dropdown box. I noticed that weight and dimensions for variable products behave this way, so how can I accomplish it with other attributes?

  • At Product Data > Variations tab, each variation has a set of fields where you can enter the parameters for the variation. At the bottom of these fields you should have one called “Variation Description”. Introduced in WC 2.4. You can put the size or whatever in here. This info will be shown when the user selects the variation.

    The “Additional information” tab showing all the attributes is behaving as it is intended to do. To hide it, uncheck “Visible on the product page”.

    Yes, but it is not shown in the ‘Additional information’ tab. And even if it was, I suppose it would say ‘Description: 5 litres’ (or whatever I enter in the field) and not ‘Size: 5 litres’, which is what I want it to.
    It really ought to be possible to add custom fields for variations like it is for simple products.

    No it won’t show in the Additional Information tab. It should show underneath the attribute selection drop-down and above the variation price. This position may be theme dependent. It’ll say “Size: 5 litres” if that’s what you put in the Variation Description field. Mine doesn’t say “Description:” so maybe that bit is theme dependent also.
