Author posts don’t publish without admin approval

I want to allow people to submit content to my blog, and it seems to my (non-technical) mind that the easiest way to do that is to set the default role for people who register to be “author.” But I also want to be able to control what gets published, so I want author level posts to save as draft and not have a publish option.

I can’t be the first person who has wanted to allow community input with some degree of moderation by admin, but I can’t seem to find a solution.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
