Auto Comment Approval Doesn’t Work

    I currently have a page (not post) that will not automatically post comments even though I have removed the checkboxes from the Discussion settings that ask for a previous comment to be approved and for comments to be approved manually.

    When the page was first created the setting was on to require a previously approved comment (which is my first preference). That wasn’t working either so I took it off.

    What do I need to do to allow for comments to appear without moderation?

    Take a look at Settings -> Discussion in your Dashboard. If you want absolutely no moderation, you’ll need to make sure that these items are *not* checked:

    – Comment must be manually approved
    – Comment author must have a previously approved comment

    Next, below that, take a look at how many links you allow. Keep in mind that the website field counts as 1 link, and that entering 0 in this field means you don’t allow any links, thus holding anything with a link (even the website field) for moderation. For example, if you want to allow a commenter to provide a link in the website field and a link in their comment, you’ll want to allow at least 2 links.

    Finally, that a look at the moderation list below that. This list matches any string of letters, so if for some reason you put “ring” into the moderation list, it would also hold any comment for moderation that included the words “string” or “bring.”

    As I mentioned the check boxes have been removed from those two fields.

    I just looked at the rest of the settings and the links are set to 2 (and have been)
    There’s nothing at all in the moderation list.

    Any other ideas?

    Double check that moderation list and make sure there are no spaces or line breaks either, because those count too.

    Thank you, again! I truly appreciate it.

    Now, I feel a little foolish, too. As you got me looking closer at my settings I noticed a little gray notification saying that Akismet was flagging all comments as spam. My subscription had expired! I’m posting this in case anyone in the future has the same problem. It seems to be working just fine now.
