This seems to have happened recently without me noticing.
I am adding YouTube videos to my self-hosted WP site by just including the YouTube video link in my post.

    For example, see:
    https://lerner.net/montas-song/

The video plays fine in my ordinary computer browser. And it plays fine on the iPad if I go directly to the YouTube site and go to the video in Mobile Safari. So it’s not a Safari problem per se.

But if I go to the above link directly on my iPad the video won’t play. None of them at my site do via WordPress. You see the image and play button, but it acts like it’s just a static image.

Anybody know what might have happened?

Could this be related to all the JetPack upgrades lately? I can’t think of anything else that changed at my site.

    Thanks,

    doug

Hi. I saw your post at Apple too. The thing is, mine is working now on my iPad 2 under the lastest iOS 6.

Since my original post I’ve gone through various upgrades of WP and iOS, so I don’t know what fixed it. But I just tried it and the link in my original post is working on my iPad 2.

Maybe you could compare the source and see if the embed code looks different?

Sorry, but I don’t understand- compare what to what?

I just updated WP & iOS on my iPad and I still have the problem: the video doesn’t even display, it’s just blank.

Could you copy/paste your working video embed code on this site if/when you have time?

    Thanks for your response.

The actual “code” I entered in my post was just the YouTube link:

It automatically embeds. The embed code that WP appears to be serving is:

    span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='640' height='390' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/lwszqKtKnG8?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent' frameborder='0'></iframe></span>

But WP automatically creates that. I didn’t enter that. All I entered was the YouTube link.

Hmm. I can’t get any of your videos to embed & work on a test page of my site even on the Mac!

There’s got to be info on this somewhere. I’ll be damned if I’m gonna pay Apple to answer this question. But I may have to.

    Thanks for your help.

I’m sure Apple would just tell you to contact WordPress anyway.

It’s curious that my videos don’t work on your iPad 2. You mean they don’t play when you visit my site? Or they don’t play if you put them on your site?

My iPad is running iOS 6.1.2. Is that the same as yours?

I can’t imagine what else might be different on the iPad 2 other than version.

Sorry I’m not much help. All I seem to be able to say is, “Well, it’s working here” – but that’s all I know.

Your video works fine on my ipad & mac.

On my mac, I tried embedding your video on a test page using the simple link method (where wp fills in the code) and also using the embed option (which results in the same code anyway). Neither worked on my mac or ipad.

However, I also tried embedding one of the videos on my own site but using the simple link method instead of the embedded way (which is how I did it on my site, & which works for the mac but not the ipad). The simple link embed didn’t work on my mac.

    Who knows why.

One question for anyone who has the answer- When you embed video using the simple link method, there is a menu with options for the video type (eg. frame, flash, etc.). How do you know which it is? Does WP figure it out for you?

    hey guys,

just wanted to say thank you so much for starting this discussion. i googled a lengthy question and this is what popped up! i was having the same trouble with the youtube embed issue that you guys described above. i was able to view the embed via pc, but on ipad2 and iphone5… it wasn’t showing up. i am using responsive… so i don’t think it was just an issue with weaver, because i also experienced the same issue. i do believe the main issue has to do with the sizing of the video when you embed it… the plugins or custom settings on the respective wordpress blogs/websites try to resize it to a format that doesn’t work. in a nutshell, i found if you will just copy and paste the actual URL from the youtube video, it works just fine. works on pc, iphone5, and ipad2 for me and that was the one change i made.

TL;DR — simply copy and paste the URL from the youtube video onto the site! good luck and hope that helped.
