Is there really no other solution? Iam looking for an auto <!–more–> after 45 words.

Use the_excerpt tag instead of the_content on your index page.

Your “main page” in the blog is displayed by the index.php (see the visual anatomy of a theme. In the post area/div in the code you’ll find the template tag which displays the content, called (what else?) the_content. My suggestion was to replace it with the_excerpt – though in that case there is nor “more” link… the reader has to click on the title to get to the whole post.
