Please Help asap I used the auto update to update from v3.0.1 to v3.2. I have made a full home directory backup and did the SQL backup and then deactivated all plugins, then clicked the automatic update.
After update saying successfull when clicking on the Dashboard or any button it gives this message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function is_multisite() in /home/hhwales/public_html/wp-includes/default-constants.php on line 20

I have tried restoring the home directory backup and importing the SQL backup the SQL import gives this error message:

[Code moderated as per the Forum Rules. Please use the pastebin]

Please help as not sure how to get my blog restored correctly.

  • Your upgrade did not complete successfully. Restore your backup first then try:
    – switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – re-running the upgrade manually using wp-admin/upgrade.php.

Hi esmi, thanks for prompt reply to this. Just so I’m clear on my steps.
    1. I’m restoring my home directory backup
    2. renaming the default theme which is twentyten, guess I would have to upload a fresh copy of the theme folder?
    3. Deactivate plugins using the link describing how
    4. Upload files and folders – do I have to do this from v3.0.1 or of v3.2?
    5. how do i re-run upgrade manually using upgrade.php just add it to the end of web address?

    1. No – your database backup.
    2. Were you already using Twenty Ten?
    3. Yes.
    4. 3.2.1
    4. Use https://example.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php

    1. getting an error when trying to restore the SQL backup (not sure how to paste the error code using pastebin as noted earlier?
    2. Yes using twenty ten
    3. Check the database wp_options and active_plugins set to how you suggested probably cause I can’t restore my SQL backup.
    4. Think I need to resolve the SQL backup issue first before uploading v3.2.1

    1. See https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

    3. Use FTP to rename the plugins folder.

I used that article to do the restore and am getting an error. where or how can I paste the error in this post, you may be able to spot the issue straight away as it seem to be complaining about a spam comment?

I’ve used pastebin to copy the error message
    https://pastebin.com/2LHPyk22

Could you take a look please?

All that mysql error tells me is that there was a problem in your database. It appears to have been in your comments and, as it mentions cracks and dvds, I’m assuming it was a spam comment. How comfortable are you with editing the .sql file? Whatever you do, don’t edit the original. Make a copy and see if you can remove that record from the copy. Then try restoring from the copy.

Trying that making now difference. stumped.
Can I upload the sql backup to you possibly?

I’m not sure sending me a copy would help. What happened when you tried restoring that amended backup? Have you tried restoring the original backup file into a completely fresh database?

I tried restoring the backup into a new database, before your response and the restored successfully. Think I’m going to drop all the table on the live database and run the restore. The test database I created had no tables and all data seemed to restore successfully.
    What you reckon?

What you could try is editing your wp-config.php file to point to the new database instead.

I have edited the wp-config.php to point to new database, busy downloading and uploading the wp-includes and wp-admin to carry on with your suggestions to manually upgrade and will do this following Updating_WordPress hopefully this will all work.

Esmi, thank you soooo much for your help.
Restoring the backup into a new database, changing the config to point to the new database, uploading the latest version then running the upgrade.php worked. I will definitely be following these steps (not the new database restore part) for any future upgrade, do not trust the Automatic anymore.
    Big Thank you again.

Glad to hear that you up & running again. ??
