While WP tried to update itself to the latest development release (4.5-beta2-36839) it failed with the following error (as received in my inbox):

    UPDATE LOG
    ==========

    WordPress 4.5-beta2-36839
    -------------------------
      Updating to WordPress 4.5-beta2-36839
      Downloading update from https://www.ads-software.com/nightly-builds/wordpress-latest.zip...
      Unpacking the update...
      Verifying the unpacked files...
Preparing to install the latest version...
      Enabling Maintenance mode...
      Copying the required files...
      Disabling Maintenance mode...
      Installation Failed
Error: [copy_failed__copy_dir_retry] Could not copy file.
             wp-includes/SimplePie/HTTP/Parser.php

I tried to resume the update from a link in the warning message in the admin, but it also failed. Then tried to update from the ‘Update’ button, but it failed as well.

I had to manually *remove* the /wp-includes/SimplePie directory and redo the update, in which case it finished successfully.

Sounds like a filesystem glitch that locked things. Unless this happens again, it’s an ‘acceptable’ error in that WP let you know it failed and why.

Oh, you are probably right. Now I recalled that the other day I had tried uploading a bunch of PHP files while refreshing the page and had noticed that it took some more time than usual before the files were available for reading. Too bad I spent over an hour trying to find the possible bug earlier!

Update: I’m now quite certain that it’s the underlying virtual disk on a possibly network based block device. Sorry about the invalid bug report!
