• Need some help here.
One of my websites fails to complete auto updates (plugins, themes and minor WP upgrades). This site is hosted by a different company to my others.
Having looked through the forums I have tried variations of FS_METHOD, FTP_USER, FTP_PASSWORD and FTP_HOST in wp-config but have not yet come up with a successful combination.
    Most times it reports

there was an error connecting to the server

I have now got past that and it tells me

Update Failed: Could not remove the old plugin

So. This appears to be a permissions problem. If I chmod everything to 777 I can force it through (but obviously neither I or the Host want to go that route!) and I have always been able to complete updates my manually pushing files and folders around via FTP (Filezilla).
    Notes:
    1. the Host has been very helpful but do not, as a company, support WP so their advice can only be ad hoc.
    2. moving host is

      not

an option because my client companies use the hosting for far more than websites.
QUESTION: can anyone help through where the permissions/ownership of files (Mysql, Apache etc) needs to be in order to resolve this and/or is there a better combination of constants I can use in wp-config to sort this out?
    Any help appreciated.
