I’ve just realised that the WPMU Dashboard plugin had its own setting for automatic updates, which was checked by default. This is a breach of trust by WPMU Dev and should be changed immediately to be unchecked by default.

The only authoritative setting for this should be the one on the Plugins page, which was still showing “Enable auto-updates”, as it auto-updates were disabled.

    Hi @galbaras

    I hope you’re well today!

The setting in WPMU DEV Dashboard plugin is for the WPMU DEV Dashboard plugin only and it is not applied to any other plugins (or themes or WordPress core) on site. It only applies to the WPMU DEV Dashboard itself and it’s because it is extremely important to keep it up to date – due to the fact that it provides API connectivity.

In other words, WPMU DEV Dashboard used on a site with our free plugins is there only because given plugin – like Broken Link Checker with its new Cloud engine – requires constant authorized access to our API. This API is a subject of frequent updates and sometimes changes and if WPMU DEV Dashboard is not updated, connection can be lost, including inability to update WPMU DEV Dashboard in other ways than manually reinstalling them (that’s extreme and rare scenario but can happen).

But still, that automatic update option will NOT affect or “force” any other plugins on your site to be updated.

    Kind regards,
    Adam

This is a bit offensive. Of course the plugin setting doesn’t affect other plugins, but it is not presented during initial setup and circumvents the core setting, which is the right one to use.

In this day and age, “opt out” is unacceptable, and you need to make automatic updates “opt in”, the way WordPress does it.

    Hi @galbaras,

I hope you are doing well today!

We genuinely appreciate your perspective and feedback on this. The reason behind our decision to set the WPMU DEV Dashboard’s auto-update as checked by default is due to the critical role that it plays in maintaining the connection with our API.

Having said that, we understand your concerns about the opt-in preference for automatic updates. Your feedback is invaluable and we believe in continuously improving our services based on what our users say. Therefore, we will take your point into consideration when revising our features and settings.

We want to assure you that our intention is never to disrupt the control you have over your site. We apologize if our decision has caused any inconvenience, but we had only prioritized ensuring a stable and uninterrupted connection with our API.

Again, we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Our team is always here to support you and ensure we are meeting your expectations.

    Kind regards,
    Zafer
