• There are a number of plugins out there that deal with comment spam in a number of different ways with varying degrees of success.

One option that none of them seem to have is an option that I think is desperately needed. So I wanted to post about it here in case a developer somewhere decides to act upon it.

There are a small minority of sites where it is valuable to include links in some comments.

However, most WordPress sites do no need links in their comments of any kind.

There needs to be an option to automatically autodelete any comment without admin intervention that contains any kind of a link, whether an HTML link in the comment itself, an author link, or what have you.

I literally mean to autodelete them so that the site’s admin doesn’t even have to waste any time deleting the ones that were held for moderation because they contain a link.

In my experience hosting a large number of WordPress sites, 100% of the comments with links of various kinds in them are spam. 100%! So moderation isn’t needed here. What’s needed is pure automation.

Again, I recognize that some sites want comments to be able to include links. That’s fine. That’s why I recommend it as an option to be turned on or off at the discretion of the site’s administrator.

It would be ideal if WordPress’s programmers made this an option for everyone across the board. But even if this just gets picked up as an idea and implemented by a plugin developer, that would be a reasonable alternative.

Yes, but that doesn’t delete the comment. It just removes the link. A lot of plugins do that. None of them remove the entire comment. Until the comments disappear every time, the spammers aren’t going to get discouraged.

    This is built in.

There are other plugins that will automatically empty the spam queue for you.

And this will not discourage spammers. Most are just bots that post and move on. Bots do not care.

True. Bots don’t care. But the people behind the bots care. They want to see SOME kind of result that they perceive to be helpful.

Nor is an automated emptying of the spam queue the answer because we only want to autodelete comments that contain links. Not all comments that end up in the spam gueue contain links.
