Automate unpublishing a Pod

I would like to automate the unpublishing (change post status) of my custom Pod based on the content within the Pod. It seems meta, so I am not sure if this is possible.

My pod has a date field for “expiration,” when the expiration date occurs (current date > expiration date) I’d like the Pod to be unpublished (hidden from public view), ideally automatically. Is there a way to automate this?

I am currently displaying the pods via shortcode. And the automated unpublishing seems like a “pod admin” task rather than a “pod display” task.
