Automated core updates fail but clicking the "Update Now" button works

  • Automated core updates are failing 100% of the time but clicking the blue “Update Now” button still works 100% of the time.

    The Background Update Tester plugin says everything is fine (I thought about that because I have FTP credentials in wp-config for other updates).

    My one clue is from my log after turning on wp-debug but I can’t figure out what it means:

    FYI, I’ve set perms to 777 on files and dirs to see if it was a perm problem. I’ve set ownership every possible way I can think of (normal is user:apache – I’ve tried apache:apache and user:user to no avail).

    I disabled all plugins — deleted the upgrade folder — still nothing.

    Anybody know why automatic updates are failing?
