Is anyone else have a problem with incorrect tax rate calculations in the United States? The store I am developing is based in New York and rates aren’t adjusting based on zip codes.

I am using the latest versions of Jetpack (7.0.1) and Woocommerce Services (1.18.0).

    Thank you,

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

You are expecting different tax rates depending on the customer’s New York State ZIP code, is that correct?

In that case, can you give one or more examples of a destination ZIP code for which you’re seeing a returned rate that differs from what you expect?
Here is a table of rates per locality, along with some other information on New York State taxes in case it’s helpful.

    Hi Paul,

For 10566 I am getting 8.375% when it should be 7.375%. In White Plains, NY the tax rate is 8.375% for 10601, 10602, 10603, but 10604 is 7.375%. I am getting 8.375% for 10604 too.

I have another site I manage for a client and all tax rates are correct for the same zip codes.

The one I am having a problem with is on a subdomain and under development, no SSL.

    Thanks for your help.

    Jim,

Can you verify that “Enable automated taxes” is currently selected (at the top of WooCommerce ? Settings ? Tax ? Tax options)? If you remove the NY row from the “Standard rates” table, does that change the rate you see on checkout?

    Paul

P.S. It doesn’t matter but just a note that I’m seeing 10603 as 7.375% as well.

    Paul,

Yes “Enable Automated Taxes” was selected when we were testing. When I removed the NY row and tried testing again with a 10566 zip code, it was inserted automatically with the 8.375% rate.

Another odd thing I had a problem with was importing a CSV file with some rates, even with Woocommerce Services disabled. The imported rows were missing city and zip code fields and an “*” was there in their place. I disabled Jetpack and imported the CSV again and all fields were there including city and zip.

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Hi Paul,

I uninstalled Woocommerce Services and Jetpack and reinstalled them again and still have the problem with incorrect taxes. I am using the Avada theme which is up to date. All plugins are up to date as is WordPress and PHP v7.1.

Any idea of what is causing the locked in 8.375% rate. I tested with other states and still get that rate.

Is there a table in the database that needs to be cleared out?

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

I tried this out on my test site, and I was able to see all of the correct tax rates when my store’s address was from NY (with the zip code 11211).

Here are the rates I got for each of these zip codes:
    10566: 7.375
    10601: 8.375
    10602: 8.375
    10603: 7.375
    10604: 7.375

These are the same rates I am able to see on the TaxJar sales tax calculator here:
    https://www.taxjar.com/sales-tax-calculator/

Can you share a screenshot of what you see in your store’s checkout page when calculating tax?

Also, would you be able tell me what your store’s zip code is? If you’d rather not share these two things publicly, please email our support directly here:

    https://woocommerce.com/my-account/create-a-ticket/

In your message include your question, the zip code of the store, that screenshot, and a link to this thread.

    Thanks!

    Hi Valerie,

I found out what I did wrong yesterday. I had a shipping rate for Local Pickup. With that selected the tax rate was the store base address and not the customer address.

Thanks for the time you put into researching this and getting back to me.

    Regards,

    Jim
