Hi, just to let you know that automatic WP 5.1.1 update broke several sites that had Wordfence installed. Not only did it crash the site where it was installed, my entire server with add on domains, subdomains etc were crashed :/

I was able to rename the wordfence plugin folder and then reinstall it, but just to let anybody know if this happens for them.

I had two sites crashed on separate servers, one had PHP 7.2, one PHP 7.3, both on Apache.

  • Hey @dingo_d,

    Thanks for sharing this.

Did you receive any errors you can share?

Are you able to share your PHP error logs? If you’re not sure where these are your host can provide them to you.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Gerald

If my logs are correct it was:

/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/vendor/wordfence/wf-waf/src/lib/xmlrpc.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in file or directory /plugins/wordfence/vendor/wordfence/wf-waf/src/init.php on line 20

Once I’ve removed the plugin, and then reinstalled it it worked.

So only on sites that automatically updated the minor WP version did this happen

    Hey @dingo_d,

Thanks for the update. It sounds like it might have been a WordPress update that failed somehow. If you do run into this again, please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Gerald

    Will do.

    Hey @dingo_d,

After speaking with a colleague I learned there’s some code you can add to the .htaccess file that may help specifically with LiteSpeed server environments.

    https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/system-requirements/litespeed/

    Thanks,

Shouldn’t Wordfence add this when it suggests the creation of the .htaccess file?

I mean, I can add this, but for people who are not that tech savvy it would be good to add this automatically ??

    Thanks

    Hey @dingo_d,

I definitely understand the usefulness in this, and I’ll be sure to add it as a feature request!

If anything else comes up please let us know.

    Thanks,

    Gerald

I’m desperately searching for an answer as to why Publicize won’t work and found this thread because of the xmlrpc reference.

I know nothing about stuff like this! Will Wordfence be sorting out the xmlrpc problem so people like me have it working properly?

I have the latest WP 5.1.1 and just installed Wordfence, Publicize no longer works and I suspect it is to do with xmlrpc.

    Hey @marywt,

    Wordfence does not disable XML-RPC.

If you disable Wordfence and it does resolve the issue can you please start a new thread per the Forum Guidelines?

If it does not resolve the issue I’d suggest contacting Jetpack Support for their thoughts. In the meantime you can check all other plugins for a conflict.

    Thanks,

    Gerald
