• In the past the whenever I made a new post, wordpress would automatically make a thumbnail off the first image I use in the article. The article thumbnail was used on the main home page of the site in my theme, as well as when you browse by categories of articles.

A while back that image thumbnail stopped working. All the old posts still work fine and still have their thumbnail image where it should be, but for the past few months any new posts I write don’t get any auto thumbail. There is now just nothing in that space.

    Examples:
daydull.com home page, each article should have a thumbnail image to the side of it.

Daydull sort by category page toward the bottom the images are still appearing correctly, but all the newer posts towards the top have no image thumbnail.

I’m not sure when exactly this started. It might have been from upgrading wordpress several months back, but I’m not sure. I hadn’t made any changes to the theme/css etc that I think would cause something like this to happen so I’m at a loss. I tried looking through the theme CSS files but can’t see what might be wrong or how I would fix it.

    Thanks for any help!

    Try:
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
    increasing memory

Thanks for the reply. I tried switching to the Twenty Sixteen theme as well as several other themes which should definitely have had post thumbnails. When switching to other themes I generally did not see any article thumbnails at all.

Even my older posts that currently have thumbnails and appear correctly did not have thumbnails when I switched to another theme.

Does this help narrow it down at all?

Have you also tried increasing memory as I suggested above?

Yes I just tried increasing it to 96 following the instructions on the link. No change — missing thumbnail images from old posts and I tried creating a new post (article) and it was also missing a thumbnail image. (Sidenote I’ve never seen any errors related to running out of memory in wordpress or my webhost so I didn’t think that would be the issue–but I tried anyway.)

Thanks for the help so far. Any other thoughts?

I’ve come across some articles about the “featured image”. It appears the theme I’m using does not have that, it is a theme that was made several years ago. Could that be the cause for this? Not sure why it would suddenly stop working.

Edit: Ok when using the “featured image” option in a new post I am able to get it to work right in other themes. Seems the problem is just that the theme I am using, which was created back in like 2010, is outdated and doesn’t support the new way “featured images” are used. I’ll probably upgrade to a new theme or try to figure out how to include the featured images in my current theme.

Yeas, the problem seems to be with your theme.
