Automatic scroll at 600px when testing with Chrome’s Toggle Device Toolbar

    Hi,

    I’m testing a client site for mobiles with Chrome’s Toggle Device Toolbar, and I noticed that, for some reason, when resizing the viewport while I’m not at the top of the page, the window automatically scrolls back to the top at exactly 600px, only when resizing from above to below this specific value.

    I did the usual basic debugging steps: theme switch, disable plugins, none of these fixed the bug. It can be reproduced with official WP themes as well, without any plugins being installed.

    Did someone else experience this strange thing? And does someone know what’s causing it?

    It’s not a tragedy, of course, but it can be pretty annoying when I’d like to check specifically what happens when the viewport gets resized manually by a site user, and the scroll position is not at the top (e.g. fixed header testing).

    Maybe a fix of it?

    That is strange! I never noticed the behavior until you mentioned it. Curiously, it doesn’t happen with all themes, but it does with a lot of them. But it looks like the root cause is the admin bar, specifically when it changes the number of icons displayed.

    When logged out with no admin bar the behavior is gone. And it’s only in the mobile emulator. If you instead resize you normal window, it doesn’t happen. Apparently it’s some odd interaction between the admin bar and the mobile emulator. I cannot offer a true fix, but the work-around is either log out or check responsiveness with a normal window resize instead of using the emulator.

    The workaround you recommend is completely OK/workable – I guess I just needed this feedback about that the described behaviour is indeed something reproducable, by anyone, and with mulitple themes.
