Automatic update failed

Try:
– switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder using FTP (or use whatever file management application your host provides)

– resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

– re-running the upgrade manually.

– reviewing https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/411649

Sounds like it’s stuck in maintenance mode. This is controlled by a file called “.maintenance” which you should be able to delete using your FTP.

It is meant to expire after ten mins though…

This is the 2nd or 3rd report of this effect I’ve seen. No reports of the public site being left in Maintenance Mode in the earlier reports. A re-upgrade with a fresh set of files seems to clear it which suggests that either the initial upgrade included a damaged file or a flag isn’t being deleted post-upgrade. I’ve got an (unconfirmed) suspicion that some plugins (and maybe a couple of themes?) are interfering with the upgrade if they haven’t been fully deactivated.

I did another manual update and the message still appears on the Dashboard. Everything is working fine. I got the maintenance message and that disappeared as it should. But the automatic update message persists:

An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.

This is confirmed as being generated because there is a .maintenance file left over from the failed auto-update. Use your FTP client to delete the .maintenance file from your WordPress directory. (You may need to set your client to show hidden files)

Help! I tried automated update to 3.0 and the WP servers crashed mid update. Now I can’t get into anything- just a white screen. I deleted the .maintainence file but that had no effect.
Suggestions would be very welcome.

You should really start a new topic as you have a different problem to tablewine.

That said, I’d try a manual update.

MrMist is correct. Had to set my FTP program to force showing hidden files on the remote server. Found the .maintenance file in the root directory for my blog and deleted it. Did not require any other action (e.g., another manual install.) Message in Dashboard went away. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I had a problem trying to auto-upgrade the twenty-ten theme from version 1.0 to 1.1. I repeatedly FTP’d to my 1and1.com webspace and deleted the .maintenance file from the WP root directory and tried again, but it never worked. Tech support at 1and1.com says that it’s a WordPress problem and I believe it now after seeing esmi’s suggestion above, ie renaming the plugins folder. I tried that and it upgraded in 2 sec’s the first time I tried it. Thanks esmi ??

I too have experienced it on some of the blogs; may be a host specific problem. But deleting .maintenance file in the root directory clears the message.
