Automatic Update & File Permissions

  • A newbie here so not sure if this is the right place. Also not technically minded at all.

    I’ve been having problems in using the Automatic Update feature to update to 3.9.2. It states that I have inconsistent file permissions. I tried to update manually but some files were not copying across using SFTP/Filezilla.

    Having read through the Codex on file permissions, I think I know the source of the problem (not the solution). The original WP installation was undertaken by a managed hosting service on a dedicated server (no problems with the auto update then) but has since transferred to a virtual server and I can update plug ins but not WP site. If I change the file permissions using SFTP/Filezilla then I get a new problem (I can no longer log into the CMS as I have insufficient permission). I having been restoring the old site – but again I cant do that via FTP.

    Am I right in thinking the issue here is the fact that the installation and re-installation was not done via the FTP so it is getting confused with the interaction of the users and groups ie WP Auto update is piggy backing on my FTP credentials and that is not working because I did not set all the credentials at the installation/reinstallation point via the FTP.

    If that is right, then I could do with some assistance on what to tell my managed service providers to do! Or even to ask??

    Or is the solution to wipe and re-install from scratch?

    Thanks janet4now – I have but they got stuck – none of them are WP people and they seemed to be going down that route ie there is something wrong with WP. However, from what the Codex it looks like it may not be that. I am able to go back and tell them to look again but was hoping to get some sort of steer on here first.
