Automatic Update Give Blank Admin

I’m trying to update my site automatically (clicking update now button). The process starts, but instead of the usual messages like “Going in to maintenance mode” etc., nothing appears in the admin area. I still have a left navigation, but no top banner and nothing in the middle of the screen (see here:https://i.imgur.com/Qp2MZxs.png)

If I try to re-run the update, I get a message that an update is already in progress.

Any thoughts on how I can troubleshoot this problem?

It should also be noted that my admin section is extremely slow as is the site for the initial contact with my server (i.e., before I get anything in the network tab in dev tools). Not sure if this is related.

I have all the correct permissions set and I am able to update plugins with no problems.
