• I realize it’s stupid to put two problems here, so I’ll put the more important one first.
WordPress ‘updates automatically’. I think this is Really Bad strategy. I back up before a major change. I don’t need to find out that my entire website was updated with no backup beforehand.
AND, the other day, my site was returning error messages. I could ping and tracert the site, but not see it. My provider thinks nothing happened. I think WordPress had it in ‘update mode’ without telling me.
This is unacceptable. Allow users to decide when an update will be effected. PLEASE.

    and (second problem)
I can’t seem to back- my ‘theme’. This new one puts Far Too Much grey space around the website pages. This is just Stupid. There should be NO grey space around web pages. User should be able to shrink page without having to leave grey borders.
Am I nuts? I think this is a waste of screen space.

    Separate responses will be OK.

Auto Updates for minor releases have been a part of WP core since 3.7

    Please read https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Configuring_Automatic_Background_Updates

These are only MINOR releases and only change files that changed. It was not a major release, it didn’t uninstall and reinstall files like a major release. You’ll only see edited files for the files that were edited, and that’s okay ?? The only exception to this is if WP notices you edited core. Which you’d never do.

We’ve already pushed a handful of auto-updates (3.7 -> 3.7.1 -> 3.7.2 and 3.8 -> 3.8.1 -> 3.8.2) so most people should have noticed this trend already. We really, really, really, think this is a good thing, the auto-updates. They’re only for minor fixes, which are critical security or bug-fixes only, and we’re helping keep you and the rest of the web safe by doing this. So many people forget to upgrade, at the very least we can protect them from their own neglect. And … yes, it is that big a problem with people not upgrading.

Finally, remember this is just files. We’re not updating the DB here, so it’s crazy safe.

I can’t seem to back- my ‘theme’.

What happens when you try to reactivate your theme? What theme is it?
