• I use Shield as part of my plugin stack for every project primarily because of the security, but also due to the automatic update feature. I have noticed many projects aren’t updating in the past few weeks and all are hosted on GoDaddy Managed WordPress Hosting. I always set the plugin to update plugins and themes, but i have noticed several not doing so. Any thoughts?

That’ll probably be an issue with your WordPress crons. Maybe have a chat with Godaddy about investigating them.

I have them looking into it. Are you sure it couldn’t be anything on your end? I really need to get this corrected as I use your plugin as a default in my plugin stack for all projects. The automated updates is paramount.

I have no information to go on to suggest that it’s my end.

We simply hook into the WordPress automatic updates API. It’s very straight forward and if that automatic updates doesn’t get fired in the cron, then this plugin setting has no effect.

It’s also possible to block automatic updates using other plugins or wp-config settings, but I assume you’re familiar with that and have checked that this site doesn’t have any of that going on.

Can we connect over email and you take a look at one of these accounts. I use GDWP hosting for over 100 projects and mainly cause I decided to get out of hosting. So I polled clients and that is who they all wanted me to go with from 5 options.

I’m really up for helping where I can, and if you look through the support forums, I demonstrate, but I don’t have the capacity to debug your website’s cron system… really, it’s a big job and quite time consuming. Best to see if GoDaddy can ascertain whether or not it’s working first.

Also, best to choose web hosting for your clients that suits you, since you’ll be the one looking after it. They ultimately don’t care where their site is hosted, so long as it works. Godaddy would probably be my last choice, personally…

Perhaps working through something like this would help:

I appreciate your candor, but I didn’t reach out to this forum to be lambasted about my choices for hosting for my clients. If we are being honest a plugin like Shield shouldn’t need to exist nor my plugin for simplifying the WordPress backend.

They exist though because WordPress like MS Windows is the most popular choice. So we developed services to fit around the popular option. The fact of the matter is there are better CMS options out there, but WP is the most widely accepted as is GoDaddy hosting. I was seeking to get out of hosting and they reached out to me.

They weren’t my first choice either, but GDWP hosting is my choice after extensive research of all the options and polling my clients. The price they offer is digestible by clients where WPEngine and similar options aren’t plus GoDaddy support is good and will spend literally over hour with you on the phone.

Anyways I chose your plugin to help with some hack attempts we had on GDWP hosting midway into the migration process for my clients. Your plugin works and has been beneficial in warding off those attacks. You or whoever your team are have done an excellent job!

Please don’t ever berate someone for their hosting choices and just shrug off something cause you don’t agree with it. I have worked with you in the past on tweaking your plugin to work with GoDaddy and you were excellent at that time.

We conferred through email and you went beyond the call of duty to help me. I was once again reaching out to you for what I feel is a serious issue. Such a downloaded plugin not operating properly with automatic updates on one of the fastest growing WP hosts shouldn’t be overlooked. However, you decided to basically tell me to figure it out. That is fine and thanks for your time!

I’ll give your option a shot and thanks again. I do apologize if I came across like a jerk, but I felt it needed to be said.

You asked me if I would be prepared to dig into why the WP Cron isn’t working on your site and effectively debug GDWP. I wasn’t prepared to do that. Certainly not until you/GDWP had, at least, exhausted efforts with debugging the web hosting.

Please re-read my original message and try to imagine the context and the good nature with which it was intended. When you imagine that people are inherently good, you often interpret things differently.

You were neither berated nor lambasted. I offered an opinion, but regardless, issues stemming from your choice of webhost doesn’t impel me to debug it.

Taking offense at what I said also doesn’t compel me to debug GDWP hosting either. You have yet to determine whether the cron is working on your site, and, as you suggest, GDWP support is good enough to uncover this.

I understand your frustrations at this issue, and the type of work involved with client website management work. Which is why I don’t do it any longer. Which is why I offered my original opinion on webhosts.

Some of the other points you make I agree with, but they’re not the focus of this issue.

    (@evanspress)

As I previously said I apologize if the response seemed rude. Hosting choices weren’t the original focus of this post either. I merely responded the way I did because I felt the “need” to explain my choice as you stated it wouldn’t be your first choice of host.

Anyways, I’ll continue to work on this and report back. Ideally I would like to see GDWP support look into this issue. GDWP hosting is very locked down and doesn’t even contain error logs. All I can do at the end of the day as a consultant is to put the best solutions in place that I feel based on my professional experience are best to offer. Its hard for me at times because I do have a sysadmin and development background so I’m sure you understand my frustrations.

I feel your plugin on top of GDWP is the best option for most projects for most clients. I focus on setting up clients where they can use me or anyone for services going forward without having to start from scratch or feel lost.

Everyone wants to be as much DIY as possible these days, which I don’t agree with, but it is what it is. Thanks for your responses and time again on this matter. I do honestly appreciate your time and feel your contributions to the WordPress community should be highly praised.

Sounds good Johnathan… I’m really am happy to help. Afterall, as you say, if this is a serious issue with Shield on GDWP that is not the fault of GDWP, then I need to know it.

Our experience with GD is extensive, and rarely does it end up being problems with our code. Invariably we have to code around their stuff, which is not the road I want to go down. And I also can’t afford time to debug GDWP’s own platform – which I hope you appreciate.

Please keep me posted and I hope we can put aside any misinterpretations / misunderstandings from this.

    Thanks.

No worries! I can appreciate it completely. I had a client that had a problem with GDWP the other day and she said she’ll call WordPress to fix it herself. =)

Good day and hopefully you’ll enjoy that tidbit. I’ll report back.

Hey Johnathan… just checking-in, were you able to get any further with this issue?

    Thread Starter Johnathan.PRO

    (@evanspress)

I’m still waiting to hear back from GoDaddy. I have pushed this matter through to 3 people, but it isn’t getting much attention. I personally feel its a big deal and should get priority especially considering the amount of sites using your plugin.

    Thread Starter Johnathan.PRO

    (@evanspress)

Well good news. I “think” the issues at GoDaddy have been resolved. I’ve logged into several past projects there weren’t updating before and many appearing to be updated in the past couple of days. So perhaps it has been resolved after all the fist pounding and reaching out to half a dozen people.
