• I was having a problem using the auto updater in my WordPress. I assume this is a new thing to put in the FTP and everything, however whenever I do it, i get

    Downloading update from https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/release/wordpress-4.9-no-content.zip…

    Unpacking the update…

    Could not create directory.

    Installation Failed

I have looked at other threads and haven’t been able to find the correct answer. I saw most of the posts saying that I should just do it manually, however, honestly I feel that is rather frustrating and annoying. I am the FTP account holder and have access to both the FTP account itself as well as through an FTP uploader. I have tried changing the permissions on the folders (/wordpress, /wp-content). However, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong because its still not working.

    Thanks in advance!

Also, if its any consolation, it wont even let me upload images, it just says

Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2017/11. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

  • I am also having a permissions-based update error, however slightly different. In your wp-config.php file, did you set filesystem write method? You might want to try:
    define('FS_METHOD', 'direct');
Also, what permissions have you set for your files/folders?

Where do I put that? I tried to put it in near all the other defines but it didnt so anything. My permissions are set to “owner read write execute, group, read execute, public is read and execute”

I have gone through MANY articles, both on here and on other website. I don’t think its a permissions issue. I have added the above mentioned code to my wp-config.php and it still isn’t working. I have tried changing all the permissions on just about every folder I could find, still nothing.

One gets the FTP prompt if the permissions and/or ownership are incorrect.

    1. How is your site hosted?
    2. What is the owner of the file tree in which wordpress lives?
    3. Is that the same as the userid under which PHP is running?

Have you tried to do that:
1- Make a complete backup of your FTP WordPress files(All of it).
2- Delete it from the FTP Server.
3- Do a fresh install using the version.
4- Copy and paste the backup files into this new installation replacing the new files with your backup.
5- Log in in the Wp-admin and reinstall your old theme (all of the rest will be there).

    I am hosted through 1&1.

Im sorry, I don’t understand how to find this information out. I have my site hosted through 1&1 and I created a MySqlDatabase, as well as an FTP account through the 1&1 CP. That is what I used years ago when I initially installed WordPress.
    3. Is that the same as the userid under which PHP is running?
Again, sadly I don’t know how to find that information out ??

Here is the information of my MySQL Database and FTP account:

I was trying not to delete any files that the directions said not to in the articles on manually updating WordPress. It seemed pretty adamant on NOT deleting some files. I wasn’t sure if in general a back-up and deletion would be a wise choice. Especially since I would lose everything doing a fresh install.

    1. Please contact 1and1 support about the permissions / ownership stuff.

    2. Change all the passwords you posted (that I removed). It was public, albeit briefly. DO NOT POST PASSWORDS OR LOGIN INFORMATION.

I didn’t post the passwords, just the usernames and host name. However, I think at this point the permissions are the least of my worries. Right now if you go to my website you can see there is a fatal error. I don’t know what to do to fix that. https://photography.modernrevolutions.net

    The error is

which indicates one or more files are missing. Do a manual update: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

Does it tell you which files are missing? I’ve tried the manual update. I did notice that during the update some files “failed” to upload/install, but it said there was not enough space, but that cant be possible because MySQL database has “1020 of 1024 MB available” Which is a direct copy and paste from my database control panel.

Your database size has nothing to do with available disk space. Please contact your host.

The update worked! I saw that I had a rather large file that I had uploaded to download onto a different computer but I never deleted it. I deleted that file and its all working now! Thanks!
