Say I have two WordPress sites, foo.com and bar.com, and each has the Webmentions plugin installed.

If I write a post on foo.com that contains a link to bar.com, will foo.com send a Webmention to bar.com automatically? Or will I need to manually visit bar.com and enter the URL of the post at foo.com into the Webmention submission form?

It is supposed to be automatically.

What might I be doing wrong in that case? What conditions are necessary for this to work?

I installed the plugin and activated it. The <link rel="webmention"... code is in the <head>. I even switched to the Twenty Twenty theme to make sure something weird in my theme wasn’t screwing something up, and deactivated all other plugins.

I mentioned a page from webmention.rocks on my “foo.com” in the above example, and webmention.rocks showed it. But my own bar.com isn’t _receiving_ webmentions.

Have you enabled “self pings” in the Webmention settings or how hove you tested the receiver?

No, but I’m not self-pinging, I’m pinging from one WP install to another.

Hmm… Webmentions are sent via a WP-Cron job. Can you try to check if you can see such jobs?
