Automatically assign featured image based on post content

You need to have the post in the DB first. Hook https://developer.www.ads-software.com/reference/hooks/save_post/ then https://developer.www.ads-software.com/reference/functions/set_post_thumbnail/

So, for the custom post type, this one, right?

In your code, you need to do an “add_action”, not a “do_action”. The former adds a function to the list of stuff do be done in the corresponding do_action call. In the hooked function, test the post type.

So, the following is not possible?

add_action( 'save_post_mypostyype', 'save_myposttype' );

function save_myposttype($post_id) {
    // saving stuff ...
}

I’m not sure without trying to code it, as it’s not something I’ve done before. I think you need to do a bit of testing, but you’re on the path now.
