We have a website featuring rentals, and we set some houses to private when they aren’t available anymore.

This move, however, doesn’t remove them from the xml sitemap, so we end up having errors on the Google Console, that shows 404s to those old pages.

We know we can manually exclude them from the xml sitemap but, is there a way to do it automatically?

What if we set them as Drafts instead of Private, do you have any experience about it?

    Thanks for any hint!
    Regards,

Dy default, private pages are not included in the sitemap. If this is not happening on your site, it may be due to a few things:

Cache – Always clear site and server cache to ensure the most up to date sitemaps. In rare cases, you may also need to toggle the sitemaps off then on to refresh sitemap cache.

Custom Post Types – If you are not using the default post or page feature, the custom post type may not be using the default private setting for WordPress. In these cases, you should manually mark each private page as noindex and not in sitemap.
