automatically rescale uploaded images

hello

Users of my site many times upload huge images (over 1MB) which uses many disk space. those images have width/height over 2000px

do you know any hacks or plugins to automatically downscale those images? i want that file will be rescaled to given resolution (eg not bigger than 1000×1000)
